Book Review: Read and Buried by Eva Gates

The Bodie Island Lighthouse Library Classic Novel Book Club is reading Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne while workers dig into the earth to repair the Lighthouse Library's foundations. The digging halts when Lucy pulls a battered tin box containing a Civil War-era diary from the pit. Tucked inside is a hand-drawn map of the Outer Banks accompanied by a page written in an indecipherable code.
The library is overrun by people clamoring to see the artifact. Later that night, Lucy and Connor McNeil find the body of historical society member Jeremy Hughes inside the library. Clearly Jeremy was not the only one who broke into the library--the map and the coded page are missing.
Lucy's nemesis, Louise Jane McKaughnan, confesses to entering the library after closing to sneak a peek but denies seeing Jeremy--or his killer. When Lucy discovers that fellow-librarian Charlene had a past with Jeremy, she's forced to do what she vowed not to do--get involved in the case. Meanwhile, the entire library staff and community become obsessed with trying to decode the page. But when the library has a second break in, it becomes clear that someone is determined to solve that code.[summary via Amazon]

Lucy Richardson, and all our favourite librarians at the Bodie Island Lighthouse Library are back for their 6th adventure, with a story to captivate the masses!

It's the height of summer, and the famous lighthouse is undergoing repairs. Meanwhile the rest of the town is preparing for the big Settler's Day festivities. When the construction crew uncover an old box, containing a diary from the 1800s with a mysterious map, Lucy and her fellow librarians must use all their best decoding skills to decode the artifacts. However, their job gets even more perilous when a member of the historical society turns up dead at the library. Who would kill over a map? It's up to Lucy to try to find the answer!!

I'm a big fan of books about books, and it doesn't get more interesting than a library in a lighthouse! Perhaps it's the author's description of the lighthouse being "bigger on the inside, like the Tardis", or the fact that she always delivers a fantastic mystery. Let's call it both!

This mystery was very captivating!! Lucy's book group is reading The Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne, and there a lot of similarities  between the book they're reading and the mystery itself. I really enjoyed how the author ties in the fictional book with mystery. Afterwards I was left with a craving to pick up the classic by Jules Verne. Any book that makes me want to read more, is a great book!!

I really enjoyed the way the author described the history in the Outer Banks, and the activity leading up to the Settler's Day festivities. The reader gets a real feel for the history surrounding Bodie Island, and why this map and diary could be so important.

If you're looking for an unputdownable cozy mystery that will help you soak up those last few rays of summer, with a captivating mystery and a little toe curling relationship (because I absolutely adore Connor and Lucy together!), then pick up Read and Buried today. This is definitely a series that should be on your reading list!

Book Review: Booked for Trouble by Eva Gates

Lucy has finally found her bliss as a librarian and resident of the Bodie Island Lighthouse. She loves walking on the beach, passing her evenings with the local book club, bonding with the library cat, Charles, and enjoying the attention of not one, but TWO eligible men. But then her socialite mother, Suzanne, unexpectedly drops in, determined to move Lucy back to Boston—and reunite her with her ex-fiancĂ©.
To make matters worse, Suzanne picks a very public fight at the local hotel with her former classmate Karen Kivas. So, when Karen turns up dead outside the library the next morning, Suzanne is immediately at the top of the suspect list. Now Lucy must hunt down a dangerous killer—before the authorities throw the book at her poor mother…
With the feeling of spring in the air here in Saskatchewan, I was more than ready to take a trip to Bodie Island and experience the beauty of a small town, with a quirky lighthouse library, that is experiencing the busy tourist season in Summer! And, of course a little murder!

This time Lucy gets herself in the middle of a murder investigation surrounding one of her mother's former high school classmate, Karen Kivas. As Lucy investigates she learns more about her mother's past, and what she learns might even shock her!

I really liked that Eva Gates delves into the complexity of mother-daughter relationships. Lucy's mom, Suzanne Richardson, is a high society mom and keeps her emotions hidden, but together through the investigation, they learn more about each other and their relationship changes. Mother-daughter relationships are now always simple and Eva Gates perfectly portrays some of those complexities.

I loved every aspect of Booked for Trouble, from the cozy town to the interesting characters. I enjoyed trying to solve the crime before the end, and I can't wait for another visit to Bodie Island.

If you haven't picked up this series yet, pick up By Book or By Crook today and take a tour of Bodie Island, and enjoy a delightful mystery too.

Book Spotlight & Giveaway: The Lighthouse Library Mysteries

The first Endangered Cozy on our list is the Lighthouse Library Mysteries by Eva Gates. In the first book in the series, By Book or By Crook, we get introduced to Lucy:
For ten years Lucy has enjoyed her job poring over rare tomes of literature for the Harvard Library, but she has not enjoyed the demands of her family’s social whorl or her sort-of-engagement to the staid son of her father’s law partner. But when her ten-year relationship implodes, Lucy realizes that the plot of her life is in need of a serious rewrite.
Calling on her aunt Ellen, Lucy hopes that a little fun in the Outer Banks sun—and some confections from her cousin Josie’s bakery—will help clear her head. But her retreat quickly turns into an unexpected opportunity when Aunt Ellen gets her involved in the lighthouse library tucked away on Bodie Island.
Lucy is thrilled to land a librarian job in her favorite place in the world. But when a priceless first edition Jane Austen novel is stolen and the chair of the library board is murdered, Lucy suddenly finds herself ensnared in a real-life mystery—and she’s not so sure there’s going to be a happy ending....

Book Review: By Book or By Crook by Eva Gates

Lucy Richardson is looking forward to a very enjoyable summer. She's just started working at the library of her dreams, the Lighthouse Library at Bodie Island. Lucy spent her summers on Bodie Island as a child with her Aunt Ellen and Uncle Amos and has always loved the Lighthouse Library. However, not everyone is happy to see Lucy working as a librarian at the Lighthouse Library. Mr Uppiton, chariman of the library board, is still upset that Lucy's Aunt Ellen got the funding for Lucy to have a summer job. When Mr Uppiton is found murdered Lucy's boss, Bertie, is accused of the murder and Lucy steps in to help solve the crime!

I have a love for mysteries set in libraries, and especially those that feature cats. When you combine these together, along with a idyllic setting, it usually ends in an afternoon of perfect reading! This was definitely the case with Eva Gates' debut novel, By Book or By Crook.

Eva Gates reels the reader in right from the beginning. Bodie Island sounds absolutely heavenly with its picturesque views, and a library in a lighthouse... well what's not to love?

Lucy is not enjoying her job at the Harvard Library and a change is just want she needs. There may be a little opposition to her new job at the Lighthouse Library, but she's really enjoying it. Especially with keeping company likes Charles, the resident Himalayan cat, named after Charles Dickens! Of course when a murder occurs and then valuable Jane Austen first editions are stolen, she must find the clues to solve the case!

Lucy is bright and fun, and together with all the interesting characters in Bodie Island, I found it a true pleasure to take a trip with her on her first adventure.

Eva Gates does everything right in this first novel. She's created reader magic in By Book or By Crook. I'm not talking the witchcraft magic, but the magic that resides in every reader and their love for books, whether it be old first editions or beloved new releases. The authors love of books shines through each and every page of this stunning mystery, and it enriched my own love of books.

By Book or By Crook is a first rate debut and I'm looking forward to taking another visit to Bodie Island for the next adventure.
